How many times have you seen headlines like "The 5 Prompts You Need to Know?" or "This Simple Hack Transforms The Way ChatGPT Works?"
It's usually something very specific to that person or the way they work, and how are you supposed to remember all these ground-breaking hacks, prompts or techniques anyway?
ChatGPT isn’t a vending machine. It’s a collaborative partner. Talk to it.
You know you've been told that to get really sharp and focused output you need to master the dark art of engineering highly detailed and structured prompts, but where do you begin?
How do you turn a just-forming idea into the detailed steps to get to where you're going, when you're not even sure where that is?
What if I told you that there's a very simple way to get there? A way that's so intuitive, you already do it all day, every day?
All you have to do is start a conversation with the AI.
Don't try to prompt it, just start talking about your idea. When it suggests or says something come back with "Yeah, but what if we did this?" or "Wouldn't it be neat if we could do that?"
Challenge it. Ask it why it responded the way it did. Get it to challenge you. Ask "What am I missing here?"
Get the AI to interview you. Tell it to ask you 5 questions about your idea, or what it is that you want to achieve.
As you go through this, you'll find your idea and what you want to do start to crystalise. If the AI offers to make the tool or prompt and you're not ready yet, then say no. Keep going until you think "Yes! This is what I'm aiming for".
Self-Explaining Software
Now, one of the really cool things about AI, is that it's the first time we've had "self-explaining software". It'll tell you how to use it if you ask it. So once you have your idea clearly shaped ask the AI to write the prompt. Or ask it "What do I need to prompt you with, to create the output for what we've just discussed?"
The Feedback Loop
Take that prompt and give it back to the AI or use it in a custom GPT or Project instruction if you want to re-use it as a persistent prompt.
If the prompt doesn't quite hit the mark; give it back to the AI and tell it, "It would be better if it did this…"
Remember...
You don't need to memorise 30 different "must-have" prompts or "10 ChatGPT Hacks", you just need to have a conversation and let the natural feedback loop take its course. Then, ask the AI to generate the prompt.
Not sure what you want to make, or how to get into the flow of this? Ask the AI to give you 5 Bad Ideas, pick one and roll with it. When you have no expectations of the result, you can just have fun with the process, and yes, it is fun. You might just end up with your next product or service idea.
You don’t need to know the right prompt. You just need to start the right conversation.
